Chesapeake Animal Control Unit

This division of the Police Department enforces the State Codes and City ordinances for the control and protection of domestic animals. Lost and stray animals are impounded at the shelter located at 3807 Cook Blvd. in the Cavalier Industrial Park. They are held for a period of time set by State Law in order to give owners time to find them. That period is 5 days without collars or ID, and 10 days with collars or ID. After the holding period, animals may be offered for adoption. Owners may also surrender domestic animals to the shelter. These animals are immediately available for adoption.

The Chesapeake Animal Control Unit generally has a variety of dogs, cats, puppies and kittens available for adoption.

Office hours are Monday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Tuesdays from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Visitation and adoption hours are Monday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Tuesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The offce is closed on Wednesday, Sunday & holidays.
